Idea 2: the anti-mentor
Levinson’s theory of adult development emphasised the important role a mentor plays. What about the anti-mentor? Perhaps negative role models are as important or more important than the positive ones.
Although I scored only 24 on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (putting me towards the autistic side of average but comfortably within the compass of normal), I’ve nevertheless always shown a slightly antisocial bent by being more impressed by people I dislike than people I like.
Fear of Flying
I’ve always been scared of heights and of flying but I don’t understand why that should be if a Behaviourist approach to phobias works.
The best way of keeping calm during a flight, I find, is to look at the bored faces of the staff. If they’re not scared, this must be ordinary. It worked for my last flight over the Atlantic and for a very bumpy ride into Barcelona a couple of years ago. I’m hoping it’ll work still for the trip to San Francisco but I don’t understand why I’m still scared.
Shy bairns get nowt
As Jo (Dr Cavagin), an colleague of Helen from the research unit at the Royal Holloway used to say, Shy bairns get nowt
. So I asked a few psychologists if they’d help out with the Psychowiki and have the ok so far from the fantastic Prof Elizabeth Loftus, Prof Noam Chomsky and Prof Baron-Cohen, with the proviso that they’re all v. busy people.
PsychoWiki up and running
Installation of MediaWiki (v1.3beta3) was easy but configuring it to my liking’s a bit more of a problem.
Freud is rubbish
This is getting good. We’re 5th 3rd 1st on Google for ‘Freud Rubbish’ and 2nd for ‘Rubbish Freud’. Helen will be pleased.
The Freud Challenge
Every year Helen holds the Freud Beanie Competition for her final-year psychology students as part of her Campaign to Rubbish Freud.
The competition comprises a questionnaire and a short essay.
Previous questions have included:
Zimbardo, Milgram and Abu Ghraib
The news about Abu Ghraib isn’t too suprising if you remember a few key experiments in Social Psychology.
