Following the fuss over Salman Rushdie’s knighthood here is my nomination for a person to be stripped of her peerage: Baroness Williams of Crosby.
I think it was a mistake…the timing was very odd indeed…this is a man who has deeply offended Muslims … who has been protected at great expense to the British taxpayer … I think it was not wise and not very clever to give him a knoghthood
Williams who, as a minister of Harold Wilson’s first government actively supported Wilson’s backing of US policy in Vietnam, now again backs the side of infamy by promoting supposed religious offence over the cause of free speech - and free speech in the form of a novel from a widely admired author.
Chistopher Hitchens responded to her obnoxious contribution by saying:
I think that’s a contemptible statement and I think everyone who applauded it should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Do you think really it’s a waste of time and money defending free expression from suicidal murderes, if you do can you think of a better cause the money should go on?
Is it possible to strip someone of their peerage? Or should we all just ignore the rancid old bat?
