I host this website on Dreamhost, and have done for years. Since setting up cloudsoup, which is largely an area for me to hack around with, I’ve setup several other sites for myself and some of my clients all hosted on Dreamhost.
Dreamhost offers the usual set of goodies you’d expect from a decent host – and then some. For the basic hosting account you can host an unlimited number of domains (with one domain name for free thrown in) and, at the time of writing:
- 182 GB storage
- 1.82 TB monthly bandwidth
- Unlimited MySQL databases
- Shell access (good if you want to install your own software)
- Unlimited email addresses
- PHP (4 & 5)
- Crontab access
- Ruby on Rails
and loads more good stuff, all for a monthly $9.95 (Feb 2007).
That’s not all, though. Dreamhost is a little like a cult amongst geeks – they know it’s run by people who know their stuff – partly because of the monthly newletters full of sad geek jokes. And their support – because things go wrong with the best of hosts – is really, really good. I know, I’ve had to use their technical support a few times over the years, largely because I didn’t understand something.
I thoroughly recommend Dreamhost and if you sign up using this link I get a little kick-back and you get a little discount: doesn’t cost you anything. Or just tell Dreamhost I recommended them.
