Things I can’t buy Helen for Christmas

According to Helen I must never, ever buy her any of these things for Christmas:

  • Mobile phone
  • Satnav for her car
  • Jennifer Lopez’s new fragrance
  • A hamster

Into the future with Google

An interesting post from Tim Worstall:

I had a quick look around Google News and saw nothing. Mildly interesting that hits on a blog, the number of people using a search engine to look for a certain phrase or name, indicates that something is happening somewhere. Sort of an early warning system before it actually hits the English speaking press perhaps?

Suggesting that peaks in Google search terms could presage breaking news before it hits the news sites.

Flash Map Game

Identify countries of the world on a time-limited Flash map:

World Map Game.

Tom Coates scored only 36, an appalling score (I suspect it’s not the greatest, says Tom). It’s really quite simple to hit the sixties, seventies and eighties unless you spend all your time in London and San Francisco and think them the entire world.

Pour épater le bourgeois

Dazzlingly talented film star Gwyneth Paltrow is reported to have said dinner party chat in the UK is far more interesting, intelligent and civilised than in the US:

I love the English lifestyle, it’s not as capitalistic as America

David Deutsch at TED

Have you ever read David Deutsch’s book, The Fabric of Reality? He really, really thinks he can proove that the many-worlds hypothesis is true, simply by thinking hard about the double-slit experiment.

I emailed him a while back about something I thought he’d be interested in and he was ever so charming and, yup, an enthusiast. Watch his talk, it’s great. You organic scum.

As close as it gets

Weekend after next, I’m off to fly a real miltary jet helicopter simulator.

A few years ago, Helen booked me into the 737 simulator at Gatwick Airport. I flew the plane into the old Hong Airport - Kai Tak - which had a crazy approach and a hard turn onto the runway. Great fun.

Now, I have the chance to pilot a military jet helicopter. Only a simulator and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Can’t wait.
