The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition produces a fantastic exhibition every year at the Natural History Museum (London). Helen liked ‘Giant Amazon waterlilies’ by Theo Allofs. I liked Anup Shah’s photos particularly. The winner this year was Dog Perrine’s picture of Bronze whalers charging a baitball.
It was a much better exhibition than the photographic portrait competition at the National Portrait Gallery which we visited later.
Here’s a difference: in the Wildlife exhibition, details were given of the camera, lens, film and other technical information; and an explanation of how the image was captured; hardly anything about the photographer but the name and country of origin was displayed. In the Portrait competition, no details of the camera, lens, film etc were given, little info about the sitter, the subject of the portrait; instead screeds were written about the photographer, including where they’d studied and what class of degree they’d been awarded.
Later on we visited the Apple Store in Regent Street where Helen bought a set of socks for her iPod. The Cult Of The iPod claims another victim.
We walked across the Millenium Bridge from St Paul’s to Tate Modern on the South Bank. We had been at Tate Modern the day the bridge had opened and promptly closed because of the unforseen resonance effect. It’s been fixed now.
