Robert Johnson vs Eric Clapton

Listened to Eric Clapton playing a Robert Johnson song on Jools Hooland’s New Year show. The song was, ‘Stop Breakin’ Down Blues’ and Helen turned off tv and put on the original track by Robert Johnson.

I’ve always always thought Clapton was crap (although I deferred to guitar geeks who would tell me he was a master of his instrument). But to compare the original Robert Johnson with Clapton’s terrible and boring version convinces me that I was right, Clapton is crap and nobody would ever wish to listen to the brilliant original if all they’d heard was Clapton’s smoothed-out elevator musak.

Clapton fans are of a certain age. They’re men. White men, who played in a band when they were younger, before they settled down. I don’t think they ever liked music. I don’t think Clapton likes music. He plays Robert Johnson songs as if he detested music.

Tony Blair is probably a big Clapton fan.
