More US politics because next year’s election here in the UK is a boring forgone conclusion. My Labour Win 97
mug is looking quite sorry for itself these days.
When I was younger I just assumed Lincoln had been a Democrat because he was one of the good guys, right? Then I discovered he had been a Republican.
Lyndon Johnson was supposed to have remarked, on signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, We have lost the South for a generation
. Interesting figures on those terribly progressive Democrats. 82% of Republican Senators voted for the Civil Rights Act while only 69% of Democrat Senators did: in the House, 80% of Republicans voted for the Act compared to 61% of Democrats. Ninety-two of the 103 southern Democrats voted against.
It was all probably very sophisticated politics by the Republicans, eh? Supporting the Civil Rights Act in order to destroy the Democrat’s Southern base because we all know that southern democrats are … um….
Anyway. Although Edwards failed to return a single Southern state the last two Democrat presidents, Clinton and Carter, were Southern Governors before they ran (Arkansas and Georgia). If the Democrats have to have a good Southern candidate to win the Presidency it means North-Eastern Hilary Clinton just won’t do, whatever else her merits. Unless she drags Bill along.
